Day 3 was oh so long...We left the Best Western in Sundance, Wyoming, which has a very nice pool and hot tub, and ate a little breakfast and were on the road about 8:30am... On our drive toward Rapid City, South Dakota, we saw a person and a dog hiking up a hill right off the freeway. As we were watching their ascent, a little deer scrambled across our path just missing our bumper by no more than 5 yards. Ron didn't see it at all, so we didn't brake or swerve, just kept on truckin'. It is usually easy to spot the white specks dotting the hillsides, and there are all kinds of the white tailed deer and antelope critters grazing in the fields of South Dakota. So thankfully, we didn't have any collisions with that one!
After driving about an hour and a half, we came to Mount Rushmore National Memorial. What a very impressive bit of artwork! We did stop and pick up a couple disposable cameras on the way there, but still no digital. There were three cute little white mountain goats grazing around the park which were very photogenic. As opposed to the teenage girls, who decided to mostly make goofy faces. We had lunch in the parking lot and were on our way again.
I got to drive a bit after Rapid City until Murdo, where we gased up. The wind was blowing so hard from the north all day, the truck felt like it was pulling to the right, so we checked the tire pressure and added a little air in Murdo. Then Ron drove again. We had heard of severe storm warnings around Sioux Falls and Sioux City. And it started to rain and blow pretty hard as we drove east. There was construction and single lane traffic coming into Sioux Falls, then we picked up I29 south toward Sioux City. Then the wind seemed to be blowing toward us from the south. The wipers were wiping as fast as they could. Somebody right in front of us decided to pull off to the left and wait under an overpass. Ron said it was just a little stressful driving conditions.
It cleared up considerably after that. We stopped for more gas and a quick bite to eat in Sioux City, Iowa. I hadn't realized the interstate was on the east side of the Missouri River, so we were excited to add another new state to our travels.
We got to Omaha, Nebraska, by 8:30pm on our watches, but somewhere crossing South Dakota we switched into the Central time zone. We had a little trouble finding the Holiday Inn. Google maps make it all look so easy. More construction areas don't help.
The beds were nice and comfy, and now its time to head down the road again...
Oh yeah, a billboard in Rapid City read, "What disease did cured ham actually have?"

You must be just following the big storm across the country! You should keep reporting the prices at the pump--they say it gets more expensive as you go east. It's up to 2.79-2.81 here in PA. Keep on truckin! You're making good progress! Next time, buy a new tent and go KOA!
What a good little blogger you are! I couldn't remember when you get back so I decided to check and was so happy to see 3 new posts! Sounds like you guys are having fun seeing the country! We did that drive when we moved out here from MI. I was about Holly's age. It's a great memory! Have fun, drive safe and we'll see you soon!
Hellllllllloooooooooooooo! Is everyone doing alright? I hope you're having too much fun. I'm eagerly awaiting your updates! Love,
