The Hike up Hum Creek..

We went up to Camp Pinewood for the weekend to visit with Amy and drop Holly off.

Saturday we decided to go for a hike and Andrew H., the camp director, came along with us. We hiked up Hum Creek, which flows out of Hum Lake. Our map shows virtually no topographical lines to climb...sounds good, right?

Check out a google map...take Lick Creek Road (NF-48) northeast out of McCall, ID, about 15-20 miles, until it turns decidedly east (and NF-084 trail continues north). If you click the "Terrain" button, you'll see that the trail there starts out at about 6800' then you have to climb to the east of that first lake to 7800' in order to go down to Hum Lake at 6800' (that trail doesn't show up on google).

Hum Creek crosses Lick Creek Road about 1.5 miles past that turn to the east. Hiking up the creek definitely looked better on that forest service map...yeah, here's the pictures:

Guess that's a bit of California fire haze way up here...

We put the leash away pretty soon, because she wasn't going anywhere without us!

Andrew ate some of these yummy looking berries on the way. I would have tried some too, but didn't know they were edible until after I took the shot. He said they were "mountain raspberries," but I'd never heard of them. I did manage to eat a couple huckleberries in passing...

We climbed up from the creek, but still couldn't see the lake up around the corner...

It was a nice rock to eat lunch on...then we headed back down. No, we didn't make it to the lake...maybe next time...

Did I mention that the creek WAS the trail?

It was a real knee-knocker coming back down!

Then Melba gets help back down the mountain...

I think we all would have enjoyed the climb more if she'd stayed back at camp, and we might have made it to the lake! Well, at least she could walk normal the following 48 hours!!! Ho-Hum!
